Eye Exams Assess More Than Your Vision

Comprehensive eye exams check more than your visual clarity. Our knowledgeable optometrists perform a thorough assessment of your ocular health, checking the interior and exterior of your eyes. We also assess the binocular status of the eyes, which is the ability of the 2 eyes to work together. These tests help us detect early signs of eye disease.

By attending regular eye exams, you’re taking an important preventive health measure to protect both the eye health and overall wellness of you and your family.

During your eye exam, we’re happy to answer questions, explain the examination process, and show you the images of your eyes that we take.

How Often Do I Need an Eye Exam?

For most patients, we follow the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommendations for eye exam frequency. Based on your age, we recommend:

  • Infants: First eye exam between 6–9 months old
  • Toddlers: Another eye exam between 2–5 years old
  • Children 5-19: Yearly eye exams after starting school
  • Adults 20-64: Eye exams every 2 years
  • Adults 65+: Annual eye exams

In some cases, we may recommend more frequent eye exams, particularly for patients who wear contacts, have existing eye conditions or other health concerns, or have a family history of eye disease. Your optometrist will recommend a schedule tailored to you.

What to Expect During an Eye Exam

When you arrive at our practice, you’ll be greeted by our friendly team. If you’re a new patient, we’ll ask a few questions about your health history, lifestyle, and current medications. We’ll also discuss your family history and take time to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Your eye exam begins with pre-testing, which uses technology to capture detailed images of your eyes, measure internal eye pressure, and assess both your peripheral and central vision. Once pre-testing is complete, you’ll meet with your optometrist for the exam, who will review your results and explain their findings.

They’ll check your visual acuity, determine if you need new or updated corrective lenses, and perform an ocular health examination that may include dilation to assess the overall health of your eyes. Your optometrist will also evaluate your binocular vision, or how well your eyes work together. Additional testing, such as color vision evaluation, peripheral vision assessment, and other condition-specific tests, may also be completed as needed.

At the end of your exam, if you need new glasses or contacts, our team will guide you through an eyewear fitting or book a contact lens exam and fitting. If there are any eye health concerns, your optometrist will recommend appropriate therapy or refer you to a specialist for additional testing.

Our Eye Care Technology

At East London Optometry, we invest in innovative eye care technology that helps us to detect and diagnose eye conditions earlier. Depending on your age, existing eye conditions, and risk factors, we’ll decide which scans are necessary at each appointment.

Some technology we may use during your exam includes:

  • Topcon Maestro OCT: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans are a noninvasive imaging technique that uses light waves to map cross-sections of your retina.
  • Fundus Photography: Fundus photos are detailed images of the inside of your eye, showing your retina, macula, blood vessels, and optic nerve.
  • Corneal Pachymetry: Measures the thickness of your cornea, used to screen for glaucoma and to determine eligibility before laser eye surgery.
  • Humphrey Visual Field Machine: Measures the range of vision you have while your eyes are fixed on a single point. Used to screen for glaucoma, AMD, and more.

We’ll also use devices to test your eye pressure, colour vision, and more. If you have any questions about the technology used during your visit, don’t hesitate to ask us!
